In a predictable and on-brand yet still embarrassing and disappointing incident from Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Cori Bush, both of whom are members of “The Squad,” a collection of far-left members of Congress, both messed up their Memorial Day messages on X. The move is less than surprising given that neither representative is particularly noted for being enthusiastically in support of the American military or its history. Ilhan Omar, for example, famously said that, on 9/11, “some people did a thing.”
In any case, it appears that the two woke representatives confused Memorial Day, which honors fallen soldiers, with Veterans Day, which honors living veterans. As could be expected, they were quickly taken to task on X for the slip-up. particularly as many Americans. particularly on the right, doubt their patriotism given some of their political positions.Rep. Omar, in her tweet confusing Veterans Day and Memorial Day, said, “On Memorial Day, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country.” Continuing, the far-left representative seemingly tried to push socialist policies by focusing on military benefits, saying, “We owe them more than our gratitude – they have more than earned access to quality mental health services, job opportunities, housing assistance, and the benefits they were promised.”Bush’s post was more or less the same thing, focusing on benefits and confusing the two days. She said, “This Memorial Day and every day, we honor our veterans in St. Louis. We must invest in universal healthcare, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, and educational and economic opportunities for our veterans as we work to build a world free of war and violence.”Explaining the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day on X, conservative personality Jessy Kelly said, “REMINDER: Memorial Day is not Veterans Day. It’s not cop day, firefighter day, first responder day, or “all who served” day. It is a sacred day that belongs EXCLUSIVELY to those who gave their lives for this country and the families they leave behind. Don’t water it down.”
Both tweets were deleted after being called out for their ignorance, yet remain preserved through screenshots taken before they were deleted. For example, X personality John Hasson used a screenshot to call out AOC on X and said, “Ilhan Omar misunderstanding Memorial Day is incredibly on brand.” Check it out here:
Replying to Hasson, commenters sounded off on the ignorance of AOC and Bush. One commenter, for example, wrote, “Truly pathetic for a member of Congress not to understand what Memorial Day is about. On brand indeed.” Another added, “She’s intimated the Second Amendment is about hunting. Nice having people who don’t understand the fundamentals of our country and heritage and who hate us in our House. What could go wrong?”
Another commenter added that the message was a platitude at best, saying, “I mean, she’s not wrong about veterans deserving services, but it’s just platitudes. She won’t do anything for them.” Another remarked on the essentially meaningless nature of her post, saying, “Great message she can copy/paste over on Veteran’s Day!”
Similarly, calling out Cori Bush, Ryan Saavedra wrote, “Cori Bush justed deleted this. Memorial Day is for honoring those who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Veterans Day, which is in November, is for honoring everyone who has served in the U.S. Military and is largely intended to thank living veterans.” Check out her post here:
